We've hit the ground running - camps are back!
Update from our HQ in Preston
After what was a year of a pretty empty Camp Calendar (thanks 2020!) we've hit the ground running. We were able to run four camps before the end of last year which was great to provide one teens weekend camp and three adult weekend camps as we came out of Melbourne's lockdown. It was wonderful to see our campers outdoors again and back on camp participating in adventure activities. It was so nice to have staff and campers coming together to head to Anglesea Recreation Camp, Stringybark Lodge and Lady Northcote Recreation Camp after such a long break.
Our January programs were great fun with our Adult campers having a fantastic time bonding together and enjoying activities. Participating in mini golf, archery, mountain biking and swimming in the camp pool. They also went for an off-site visit to Animals on the Move.
Our Kids/Teens camp also went well with lots of fun had. Campers enjoyed archery, giant swing, yabbying and pizza making as well as many other activities. During this camp they also had an incursion with 'The Rookeepers' where they took part in a wildlife session.
Here's what one of our campers, Christian, thought about camp:
"Stringybark was such a well run camp with so much activities to participate in there was no way we could ever get bored. The camp leaders, cooks, activity supervisors and of course the campers made the camp so much more special. At camp I enjoyed all the activities I participated in, the flying fox was great, basketball was fun, the bike ride was a nice and easy exercise, hut building was educational, the walk in the park was peaceful, the pool party was refreshing and funny, the low ropes course was challenging, the movie night was relaxing and hilarious and the food was quite decent. I look forward to more camps."
Update from our Ballarat Office:
Ballarat has hit the ground running with a successful 'Come and Try Day' for potential campers hosted in November 2020, a Carers Camp at Log Cabin Camp with a well-received respite weekend.
2021 has kicked of with five People Outdoors Campers attending Summer Camp at Cave Hill Creek supported by People Outdoors staff. This was a pilot program to support campers to integrate into mainstream camps and from the feedback we've received the campers had a great time!
The Ballarat office will be busy as we build a team to work with our upcoming camps in April (heading to the the Grampians) and May (heading to Creswick). We're looking forward to filling the calendar and providing more camps in the latter half of 2021. Places are already filling so please get in contact if you are interested in attending!
As we grow we are recruiting! If you from Ballarat, Bendigo, Ararat or Horsham and are interested in supporting people living with disability to enjoy camp please contact simon@auscamps.asn.au to find out more about working and volunteering with People Outdoors.
